Our Chickens

Chickens may be the funniest animals on the planet! These birds provide us with endless hours of entertainment. We have two chicken coops on the farm.  The main coop sits right above the barn just before the gardens. It holds about sixty birds that lay a rainbow of colored eggs daily.

Our second coop sits at the far end of the south block of the orchard where both Americanas and Black Copper Marans live amongst our Soay sheep. Besides providing us with fresh eggs, the chickens provide a great deal of droppings which go straight into our compost pile. This in turn allows us to naturally fertilize the gardens and orchard. And since a lot of what we grow gets fed to the animals, its a perfect closed system.
